S&P 500 Sector Winners & Losers for July 2026

July brought sharp rotation beneath a nearly flat broad market. Sector results reflected rising oil prices and Middle East supply concerns, a Federal Reserve decision to hold the federal funds target at 3.50%–3.75%, higher Treasury yields, and mixed mega-cap earnings that intensified scrutiny of artificial-intelligence spending.

June CPI declined 0.4% month over month, although energy prices remained 15.7% above year-ago levels.

Two Key Insights

First, sectors did not move in unison. Seven finished higher and four declined, illustrating how timing and the economic backdrop can produce widely different outcomes.

Second, dispersion was pronounced: the 15.99-percentage-point gap between Energy (+12.54%) and Information Technology (–3.45%) was substantially wider than the prior month’s sector range.

July Sector Highlights

Energy was the strongest sector as crude prices rose and supply uncertainty increased. The gain reflects conditions during July and does not indicate how the sector may perform in subsequent periods.

Information Technology was the weakest sector amid volatility in semiconductor shares and heightened attention to the cost and timing of returns on AI-related capital spending.

Financials also advanced, coinciding with higher long-term yields and rotation toward value-sensitive areas.

Allocation & Diversification

Sector dispersion reinforces the role of asset allocation and diversification as long-term portfolio-design principles rather than short-term forecasts.

Spreading exposure across asset classes, sectors, and industries cannot eliminate loss or guarantee a profit, but it can reduce dependence on any one market segment. An appropriate allocation depends on objectives, time horizon, and capacity for risk.

What the Dispersion Means

A sector leader in one month can lag in another as economic growth, earnings, inflation, interest rates, and geopolitical events evolve.

July’s reversal—Energy moving from the prior month’s weakest group to the strongest while Technology moved in the opposite direction—illustrates why a single month should be viewed in context rather than as a stand-alone signal.
